Losing emails |
|
|
I am running SBS2000 and all mailboxes are fine except for one, the inbox
loses all emails whenever it feels like it, could be ten minutes or 24hours
but they always dissappear from the inbox to nowhere, cannot find any of them
and it just happens to be the bosses mail. I really need some help with this,
I know its not the anti-virus or the local machine. |

If the user logs into OWA, can they see the emails?

Thinking out loud here...
You may want to back up the user's Exchange mailbox to a .pst and then run
Scanpst.exe on that backup file to see if it can find any corruption. If it
can't find any corruption, again copy the user's Exchange mailbox to a .pst
(including all subfolders), then delete the user's Exchange mailbox from the
server, purge it, then recreate it. Then log on as the user, open Outlook
and import the copy of the .pst back into Outlook. Note that this procedure
will break Exchange's single instance storage.
Break Single Instance Storage...

"The downside to not using the repair tools, rather exporting the files then
importing them, is that you break the relationships in "single instance
storage" that Exchange uses. That means that attachments that would be
stored only once otherwise, even if they are routed to everyone in the
company when originally sent, would now reoccur again in the storage
database. That can expand the size of the databases a bit, but for most SBS
based businesses, this is just a trivial issue. If you are a really
sophisticated Exchange organization, you might get bent out of shape about
this, but I doubt that applies here."

Re: Losing emails |

Thanks for the KB Merv - I have known about the issue for about 3..5-4
years - but hadn't ever seen the article (lazy I know). I can however,
confirm that the deleting of emails happens in another circumstance.
When the preview pane is on (I haven't tried it when it is off), and there
are multiple mailboxes open (i.e. Manager has their mailbox, and their 2IC
mailbox is opened as an additional mailbox - not PST), it can delete all
messages in the inbox. If you happen to be watching, the selected message
is deleted, the next message is selected, appears in the preview pane, and
is then deleted. I have seen this in several instances, at least two of
which I can be certain didn't have PST files, or filters (they were the
administrator mailbox on the server itself, in two seperate organisations).

What is 2IC?
Interesting, I've never seen this and have worked with multiple mailboxes
open since Exchange 5.0 and Outlook 9x. Most "disappearing" messages have
been caused by PSTs as delivery location or a really short archive time or
setting the view to hide read messages (BTW, that's what your description
sounds like). I set Outlook NOT to mark messages as read when selection
changes, which can help with this problem.
If the problem follows the user, not the PC. I'd start by deleting the
Outlook profile (as that is stored in the registry and follows user to new
PC). Then, if that fails, transfer messages to PST, delete and recreate
messages as Merv suggests.
