Hi,

I think that there is a good chance that I am doing something stupid
here or making some assumptions about how AD works and getting it
wrong. If anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated.

I have a domain at home, an AD server, web server and 4 clients. I
have rebuilt a laptop I have which is pretty powerful and am using it
with Virtual Server. The OS on the laptop is Win 2003 server.

Now, what I did was made the Laptop another AD Controller in the same
domain, my assumption being that it would replicate the AD information
and then when I was out and about it would act as the AD server for the
Virtual Servers. However, when I am out and about it does not work.
When I start up Active Directory Users and Coputers I get the message
"Naming Information cannot be located". If I am on the network at home
then it is fine.

This says to me that it is not really an AD server but since I know
nothing much about AD I am assuming I have done something stupid.

Can anyone help? How do I make this work? Should have made it a new
sub domain or something?

Neil

The AD server at home is probably providing DNS services. Integrate DNS
into AD and install DNS on your laptop -or- install DNS on your laptop and
make it a secondary server. Then on your laptop point dns to your laptop as
the primary and the home dns server as your secondary.

Paul,

Thanks very much. I got a chance to have more of a play last night. I
hadn't set up the DNS properly on the primary server. I have fixed
that and it is all working great now.

Thanks again,
Neil
