My question- Is there a way to upload entire folders at a time?
Thanks

Your question makes me uneasy. I get the impression that you want to |
create subfolders in a document library. That is considered bad
practice. The "approved" Best Practice is to use a flat doclib, and
show what would be subfolders by views that you create. But, if you
have Office 2003, yes you can. There is even some add-in download that
can give the same functionality for Office XP.
How would this work? In the doclib, you create a field (really its a
metafield), say 'subfolder', and give the field a default value of the
name of the folder you want to upload. (Do yourself a favor and make it
short.) Now, click on the upload a file button in the doclib default
view, then the upload multiple files vector which appears under the
name of the file on the upload file page, and you get a control that
lets you browse to the folder you want to upload. Select all of them,
and OK the upload. All the files you selected will be uploaded to the
doclib and will be given the default value for the subfolder metafield.
Good enough, as far as it goes, but you want to upload a second
subfolder. Click on the Change Settings and Columns Actions, and select
your subfolder column, change the default value to the name of the
second subfolder. Now, upload the second folder. Repeat until done.
Now you go and create your views, and have each one select on the name
in the metafield named subfolder. Wahlah! You have your subfolder on
display. Don't delete or change the All Files view. You may want some
of the functionality on that view that you may not include on your
subfolder views.
There are practical limits on how far to carry this. If the number of
items in a doclib gets large, then accessing views and items gets slow.

That setup just means that you have to have three metafields. Makes it |
really messy if you are using the default values. You might want to
search around to find an upload utility that will set metadata.

Thank you. I understand what your saying about the prefferable way to
accomplish this. Let me ask you. In the case where we have a top folder for
year, then subfolders for employees and then subfolders under that for
clients- Can we still use views for this. Also I have to get the folders into
the doclib and right now I am created each individual folder and then
importing the file as there seems to be no way to upload an entire folder
Thanks

When I said "You might want to search around to find an upload utility that |
will set metadata." I meant just that. I do not know if such a utility
actually exists, but I suspect that there is probably a third-party that has
already built it. Start with Google and search the Internet. This might be a
good place to start if you want a specific target:
