I have a client who is running SBS 2000 and he wants to set up the Shared Fax
Service. I went into Add/Remove programs, selected Microsoft Small Business
Server 2000 and chose change/remove. I went through the Wizard and chose to
install the Shared Fax service.

It looks like it's going to install, but then it puts a red X on the shared
fax service and then goes to the finish screen where it says "an unspecified
error has occurred". When I click on the More Information button, it just
says a fatal error occurred and directs me to browse Microsoft's support
knowledgebase for more information.

I tried MS Technet knowledgbase, posted on the support forums, spent about
an hour on google results and so far I have had no luck figuring out why this
is happening. It seems like it would be a pretty straightforward process
once the Fax service is installed on the server, but I am dead in the water
until I can get past this roadblock. I have a JPG screenshot of the error
message, and I can email it if requested....

Can anybody help? I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Thank you,

Phillip Lee

SBSSetup creates a log - can't remember where - c:\ or c:\windows - also,
what does the eventlog say at the time.

Ok, I have reviewed the logs created by the SBS 2000 setup process. Below is
what I have found;

In the setup.log file:

Component Name: Microsoft Shared Fax
Version: NA
Installation Status: Failure
Error Message: An unspecified error has occurred.

In the errorlog.txt file: here are the last few lines, i'm not sure if they
are relevant to the issue at hand or not.

[11/04/05,22:28:06] setup.exe: [2] ISetupComponent::Pre/Post/Install()
failed in ISetupManager::InstallManagerHelper()
[11/04/05,22:28:06] setup.exe: [2] Component error string not specified in
ISetupManager::AddToActionResultCollection()
[11/04/05,22:28:15] Suite Configuration: [2] Failed to copy 'C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Integration\Microsoft Small Business Server 2000\sbs.ins' to
'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Signup\install.ins'; 0x5

In the eventlog.txt file:

[11/04/05,16:35:21] Setup.exe: Microsoft Shared Fax
[{9E5794F6-8946-49A8-BEB4-CB5F88593AF3}]

There are a bunch of these occurences throughout the eventlog.txt file, but
they do not reveal any information about the error.

Also in the server Event Viewer there is the following event:

EventID: 11708
Source: MsiInstaller
Category: None

Product: Microsoft Shared Fax -- Installation operation failed.

As you can see, all of the log files and event viewer information is very
vague. They basically just say that the operation failed or that there was
an error. I went to EnventID.net and searched for the issue there but that
ID is related to many applications that use the MsiInstaller so it was not
helpful at all.

At this point I am not sure what direction to go in as far as
troubleshooting goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you,

Phillip Lee

I am assuming 9E5794F6-8946-49A8-BEB4-CB5F88593AF3 is the shared fax GUID -
can you confirm in your registry?

No doubt I am not telling you anything here - but this is not expected, and
troubleshooting is difficult. I would try to uninstall the current fax
services, and the re-install the shared fax - see what happens.

Well I cannot confirm whether or not that is the correct GUID for the Shared
Fax Service because I was unable to find it in the registry.

Also, I do not have any fax service currently installed.

Then I would install the W2K fax service (not the SBS service), and then
install the sbs service.

was
not
helpful at all.

At this point I am not sure what direction to go in as far as
troubleshooting goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you,

Phillip Lee

I have a client who is running SBS 2000 and he wants to set up the
Shared
Fax
Service. I went into Add/Remove programs, selected Microsoft
Small
Business
Server 2000 and chose change/remove. I went through the Wizard
and
chose
to
install the Shared Fax service.

It looks like it's going to install, but then it puts a red X on
the
shared
fax service and then goes to the finish screen where it says "an
unspecified
error has occurred". When I click on the More Information
button,
it
just
says a fatal error occurred and directs me to browse Microsoft's
support
knowledgebase for more information.

I tried MS Technet knowledgbase, posted on the support forums,
spent
about
an hour on google results and so far I have had no luck figuring
out
why
this
is happening. It seems like it would be a pretty straightforward
process
once the Fax service is installed on the server, but I am dead in
the
water
until I can get past this roadblock. I have a JPG screenshot of
the
error
message, and I can email it if requested....

Can anybody help? I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Thank you,

Phillip Lee
