Re: New server replacing other 2K3 |

Assuming you have the space to do this:
1) Use Enterprise Manager on the original server to backup the database to a
file
2) Move the file to a network drive that both servers can access
3) Shut down old server
4) Set up the new server with the OS, SQL and anything else needed
4) Move the backup file to a local drive on the new server
5) Use EM to restore the database
One thing to be careful of is any SQL logins that have been created on the
old server to be able to access the database tables. We use a reporting
program called Crystal Reports. To be able to build reports, the user needs
access to the tables in our medical database. Each one has a user login to
be able to do this. The login is preserved within the database, but not in
EM. If you don't have that many logins, you can do it manually. Otherwise
there are utilities that will do recover "orphaned" logins....
Other than that, I've done this many times with no problems.

and running SQL server to a Dell 2850 with 1.2TB capacity brand new.
The new server will take the name of the old server and so they can't
be on the network at the same time. Please give me a simple, cheap,
step-by-step way to do this. We tried to use Norton's Ghost to move
the information and we kept getting a negative value for the size of
the target drive and this meant that the source wouldn't fit. I can't
find any info on this particular problem and I am ready to go another
direction.
