Exchange SMTP Connector Retry interval |
|
|
Hi,
We are configuring two SMTP connectors (X and Y) on an Exchange 2003
server, to forward all mails with a special namespace to unix mail
system A or B.
My question now:
primary I would like to use the connector X to send mails to unix
system A. If system A does not respond, the connector X should try
again 2 times.
if there is no response from system A after 3 times, exchange should
use connector Y to send mails to unix system B.
I created two smtp connectors with the same namespace but different
Costs (10 and 20). So connector X is prefered. But how can I set the
option to try again 2 times and not use other connector after system A
does not respond for only one time?
thanks for help

Hello Eric,
Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.
I am sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend. Please understand
that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals
to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!
According to your description, I understand that you would like to
configure the Exchange SMTP Connector retry interval. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my knowledge, SMTP Connection is a session on SMTP Virtual Server,
in order to decrease the retry interval on SMTP Connector, you can
configure the setting as below.
1. Open Exchange System Manager.
2. Browse to Administrative Groups->Your AG->Servers->First
server->Protocols->SMTP->Default SMTP Virtual Server.
3. Right-click it and then click Properties.
4. On the Delivery tab, configure the retry interval as you want.
5. Click OK to save the setting and restart SMTP Virtual Server to take it
effective.
More detailed meaning by the options in Delivery tab as below:
1. First retry interval (minutes): Use this box to type the number of
minutes before delivery is attempted for the second time. The default is 10
minutes.
2. Second retry interval (minutes): Use this box to type the number of
minutes before delivery is attempted for the third time. The default is 10
minutes.
3. Third retry interval (minutes): Use this box to type the number of
minutes before delivery is attempted for the fourth time. The default is 10
minutes.
4. Subsequent retry interval (minutes): Use this box to type the number of
minutes before all subsequent delivery attempts, beyond the fourth, are
attempted. The default is 15 minutes.
5. Delay notification: To specify a time period before users will be
notified of delayed e-mail messages, type a number in the text box, and
then in the drop-down list, choose Minutes, Hours, or Days. While the
optimal time will vary depending on the reliability of your network, the
default is 12 hours.
6. Expiration timeout: To specify a time period before delivery of a
message will no longer be attempted, type a number in the text box, and
then in the drop-down list, choose Minutes, Hours, or Days. When the time
period expires, a non-delivery report (NDR) is returned to the sender.
While the optimal time will vary depending on the reliability of your
network, the default is 2 days.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other concerns or
questions. Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Nathan Liu (MSFT)
