Adding a front end web server |
|
|
Currently we have the Web, Index and Search running on one box and SQL
on another one. For load balancing, we plan to add an additional Web
server. How do I do this? Also, is this a supported topology?
Thanks |

Whilst it's true that technically this is not a supported topology it
is easily done.
I assume that yoe are using some kind of load balancer ? Personally I
use NLB across 4 web servers.
Install SPS on the second server making sure to point it to the
exisitng configuration database.
Create virtual servers in IIS to correspond to those on the exisiting
server
Then use Sharepoint Central Admin, and the ' Extend or upgrade Virtual
server' option..
Once you have seleceted a virtual server you are presented with two
options - create content database or map to exisiting virtual server.
Choose map to an exisiting server and pick the portal from drop down
list.
Your second server will now provide the content.
Also - In Sharepoint Central Admin / Sharepoint Portal Server choose
'configure server topology' add the second server as a web server only.
At this point you will see a ' current topology is not supported'
message at the bottom of the screen.
The ONLY issue I am aware of after doing this for 18 months is if you
should try to create a new portal site.
You will be unable to do create one unless you remove the web server
componant from the second web server in configure server topology.
Once you have removed the second server as a web server in this
location, create your new portal and then add the second server back as
a web server.
Then once the new portal is created repeat the process above to extend
it onto the second server.
Remember to install any web parts onto the second server as well.
