Hello,

i plan on diong a migration from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 following the
Migration Guide from Microsoft (link at the bottom).
On the current SBS 2000 there is additional Software installed (Datev and an
Archive Software) and my customer would like to keep that system intact.
So only migrate AD, EX and Fileshares to the new 2003 SBS and
remove/uninstall SBS from the old one so its a Win2000 Member Server of the
new 2003 SBS Domain.
He doesent want to reinstall Windows on that machine and reinstall the
Software.
I searched Knowledgebase, Newsgroups and Google but cant find that
information.

Can i simply "remove the SBS" from the decomissioned server and keep the
rest?

Thanks
Thorsten

Check www.sbsmigration.com for a different (and really better) method of
doing your migration.

Hi Thorsten,

No, you can't remove SBS from that system, you really need to flatten it and
reinstall with plain W2k3 server media.

Even in the situation you describe, you can't have two SBS boxes in the
domain. You'll have to reinstall an appropriately licensed OS on the old
hardware to run that software. FWIW, your customer can save a few bucks by
getting version upgrade SBS instead of a full new license.

This might be more work and/or cost than the customer is happy with, but IMO
it'll be worth it having the 3rd party apps separate from the SBS.
Performance is one reason, but another is that if you're working on one of
the servers, the other server's apps are available to the users.

I'm in the same situation with an SBS 2003 I'm migrating to new hardware.
For the old box, I'm trying to decide between a copy of Win2K Server I
already own, or a new copy of Windows Server 2003.

thats already the plan.

before:
old-HW: SBS + 3rd party

migrate SBS to new-HW

after:
old-HW: 3rd party and member server in the domain
new-HW: SBS2003

It just would be better if the old-HW just gets the SBS (AD, EX, files)
removed and joins the new domain. But Marina Roos confirmed what i feared.
Its not possible and a Windows reinstall is necessary.

Thank you, thats what i feared.
As SBS is "installed ontop" of windows i gave it a try to ask if its "just
removable".

A non-MS answer - but it works:

Install W2k3 component from SBS disk 1
Run DCPromo - add to existing domain.
Move FSMO roles
Install Exchange
Move mailboxes (and public folders) from old to new server
When you are sure exchange is working properly on new server (test by
stopping ALL excgange services on the old server for a couple of days - no
complaints=OK) uninstall Exchange from old server. You will need to do some
reading on offline address books etc - but you will find this by turning off
exchange services.
Install SQL on new server (if appropriate) - move databases from old server
to new server
uninstall sql from old server
do the same for isa.

Now the old server should have only windows, and no SBS apps (it may have
the shared fax and shared modems etc. - uninstall them).

This MAY not be OK under the licensing agreement, but there is a fair
argument that you didn't do anything wrong - just a migration. (MS allow
multiple installations of SBS and other server software STRICTLY for the
minimum required time to perform a data migration - to my mind this
qualifies).

Move SQL databases
