Does anyone know of a MOM vs Patrol competitive analysis written from a MSFT
standpoint? I understand the implications of this material. Locating a copy
would help me sell my MOM 2005 implementation.

It's all about the managment packs. Patrol, written by BMC. MOM
written by Microsoft, used by Microsoft to manage the thousands of
servers Microsoft's runs...

Again, it's all about the managment packs.

However, the one thing you do get from Patrol is better non-wintell
server monitoring. I'd imagine you can use the same infrastructure to
monitor all server platforms where with MOM it can be done... but I
don't think anybody is doing this today.

Still, you don't get the windows managment packs.

I'm really looking for a "How to position and sell MOM 2005 to management
that has previously selected BMC Patrol". While explaining "tighter
integration with MSFT products" or "because MOM has management packs" is
great, it's not driving home the key points. I'm sure Microsoft Sales has
this information but I management will not wait weeks to get it. This
shouldn't have to be something that requires engaging Microsoft Sales and
Consulting Services groups.

I would agree with Jesse. The management packs are what differentiates MOM
from other products because they incorporate knowledge directly from the
product teams at Microsoft. This is something other products will not be
able to provide (at least for the Windows platform). The fact that people
with intimate (we hope!) knowledge of the applications tuned the management
packs and developed the rules along with the product knowledge makes this a
great tool for not only detecting problems but seeing problems develop and
catching them before they get serious. That is the way I have presented MOM
to customers - as the best way to monitor Windows and other Microsoft
applications leveraging the knowledge that Microsoft has about its own
products.
