file server migration - links, shortcuts, etc |
|
|
hi there,
i am migrating a file server from a Windows 2003 server to a new Windows 2003 server. i would definitely like to preserve UNC pathnames for end users' shortcuts, links, and linked documents.
i have been reading about DFS consolidation, and realize it might be overkill since i only have 1 fileserver.
so here's my question - can i just migrate the data over to the new server, and then rename the new server to be the same as the old server? will UNC pathnames be preserved this way? of course, i would first rename the old server, then the new one.
does it complicate things at all that both the new and old servers are DCs? i plan on keeping the old server a DC after migration as well.
thanks for all the great info on this board.
