I am trying to create a cluster with a local quorum on a SAN. I have two
Dell PowerEdge Servers, one is a 6600 and the other is a 6650, with a Dell
Power Vault 220. One server has a Perc3 card and the other one has a Perc4
card. I am able to set up the cluster as a majority node, but with only two
servers, I don't think this is a good setup. The cluster service generates a
message stating that the SAN quorum could not be located/used because of a
shared bus. I assume this "sharing" is the boot drive. Can this be fixed or
worked around?

Thanks,

First, though you may not care, you configuration will not be fully
supported by Microsoft. To be fully supported you need to have a system form
here -
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/default.aspx?xslt=categoryproduct&subid=22&pgn=8b712458-b91c-4a7d-8695-23e9cd3ae95b.

You need to make sure that the internal RAID is on one controller, and the
shared (PowerVault 220) is on another card. Next, make sure the external
facing cards have different internal ID's, say 6 for one, 7 for the other.
If your PowerVault is the 220S, make sure you have the switch to "cluster
mode". After you make all these changes, if needed, you should see the
PowerVault as external and clustering will install normally.

Cheers,

Rod

In addition to Rod's comments, I'd recommend reading through the following
KB article...particularly the section about Disk Configuration.

Thanks for the quick response. I wanted to ask a question to your reply. It
is a 220s PowerVault with SCSI cables to each of the PowerEdge Servers in
Cluster mode on the SAN. One of the Perc cards is set to 6 and both are in
cluster mode. You mentioned that this would not be supported by Microsoft.
Which component is not compliant? Would a third Perc card be needed for the
SAN? And if so, which would be best to purchase, as we have a Perc3 and a
Perc4 card now.

Thanks again.

To start with both would need to be the same model Dell, you best bet is to
call Dell and ask them. They will be able to help you.
