Hi All,

If im setting up a cascade DFS, with domain based links that refer back
to a Stand alone root.

The stand alone root has the links to the shared folders for that site.

I just need help understanding the referral process.

I assume it starts exactly as a domain based dfs referral would, see
the process below - I get stumped at the final point-

·A user attempts to access a shared folder by typing
\\domain\dfs\<site>\<shared folder> in the Run dialog box.
·The client computer sends a query to the active Domain Controller
(located in the Data Centre) to discover a list of root targets for the
domain-based namespace.
·The domain controller returns a list of root targets defined for the
requested namespace.
·The client selects the first root target in the referral and sends a
query to the root server for the requested link.
·Not sure what the domain root does - refer the request directly to
the standalone root, or return the client the link target for the SA
server??

What happens at this point???

Cheers
Anthony.

Check out the DFS Technical reference at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/TechRef/a9096e88-1634-4da6-b820-537341d34906.mspx

The section you want is called "Linking to Different DFS Namespaces." This
section explains the process and shows a sample set of referrals for this
scenario. You could also do your own network traces to see exactly what's
happening.
