I have inherited a SharePoint Services server running on IIS 6.0. I was not
involved in the setup of the server & am trying to learn it as I go.

Right now users access SharePoint by using http://<computername>. I need to
change this to an actual URL. What is the easiest way to do this? Can this
be done in SharePoint, IIS or both?

You need to change Host Header Value in website properties as well as to add
a DNS record for the website name. ie. if your site will be called intranet,
then add a DNS record called intranet that points to the server where
sharepoint site is hosted, then in IIS change host header value to intranet
and you set to go ...
