Too many documents in a document library |
|
|
Is there a limit to the number of documents in a document library?
We currently have over 32,000 documents in this library and we get very slow
response when viewing the AllItems view. In fact we occasionally get a
server error ( can't seem to consistently get this to track it ). But if we
put a filter on the view and bring the document count in the view down to
about 19,000, we don't have any problems.
Does anyone have any ideas? |

Ideas:
Is there any reason why you can't create several document libraries for
these documents?
For instance if you can divide content via a view you could instead of using
a view put those documents in a different document library. (Which gets you
down to 19,000 and 13,000).
Those numbers are still too many, so think of what sub-categories you could
use to split up the documents even more.
Don't Microsoft recommend a maximum of 2,000 documents per library even
though more is theoretically possible? (I can't remember if they do - does
anyone have a different recommended [not max.] figure?)

There is an performance drop when the document count in a folder is more
than 1,000.
If he is putting the 32,000 documents into 32 folders with 1,000 docs each
he will have a performance improvement over the 32,000 docs in 1 library.
The maximum number of docs in a library is 1,000,000, whith the requirement
of nested folders.

be !
