SpamCatcher may well be misconfigured, but you're a step or two from that
being a factor. If you can't telnet to a mail server, nothing else is
going to work either. I noticed that the inch.com mail servers are a
little funny about how they display SMTP banners, so try this:
telnet dna3.deskoptional.com 25
and you should get:
220 dna3.deskoptional.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version:
6.0.3790.
1830 ready at Tue, 1 Nov 2005 19:07:57 -0700
If you do, then by all means move on to the next step. If not, you have a
connectivity issue you're going to have to fix first.

Nameservers 64.115.0.9 and 64.115.0.10 are listed for ISP: Broadview
Networks (Trenton, NJ)
Nameservers 64.52.192.98 and 64.59.5.98 are listed for ISP:
Eurekanetworks (NY)
If the latter is your actual ISP and you are sending mail out through this
ISP (with no Smarthost), re-run ICW and enter the Nameservers for
Eurekanetworks as DNS forwarders in ICW.

Not sure how to answer your question. We have two nics, internal &
external.
When I go to DNS, and to the properties of our server, it's listening only
on the internal NIC's IP. Forwarders are enabled, but I do not recognize
the IP addresses they're pointing to:
64.115.0.9 and 64.115.0.10
Looks related to our ISP - our server's external IP is 64.115.124.115
But when I asked our ISP today what their DNS is, he said 64.52.192.98 and
64.59.5.98. Not sure what to do with these.
Thank you!!!

Can you get out to the Internet and view web pages right now? How do you
have DNS set up?

We run Small Business Serve 2000. We do not use smarthosts.
No outbound email is going out. Some of our users began receiving
Delivery Status Notification (Delay)'s. All they say are:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
Then it gives the email address it failed delivery to.
I can see that there are a ton of messages in the queue, under the
Default SMTP Virtual Server.
What should I look at for troubleshooting??
The only change I've made was last week - I installed SpamCatcher, I
changed the Exchange port to 6000 and then set the spamcatcher to point
to the servers IP on port 6000 but listen on 25. Outbound email worked
for a few days after that. Nevertheless I've stopped Spamcatcher today.
Many thanks, in advance!
Also, don't know if this is related, but we now cannot see our own
website. Yes, we have a forward lookup zone.

I think that my ISP, the former, merged with the latter. I've re-run ICW,
but I'm not sure this is going to address the situation which David L. West
helped me to identify: I cannot telnet to anyone on Port 25. It seems like
everything in my ISA is configured as it should be, so I've asked my ISP if
there's any way they might be blocking us from getting out on port 25. My
fingers are crossed.
Thank you!

Port 25 is blocked |
|

Our ISP has confirmed that their ISP blocked our port 25. He said that
usually this is done because of spam complaints or some type of
virus/infection they notice hitting their servers.
Hoping to hear back from them quickly that it's been reopened.
Thanks David and everyone else!!

Any AV products running on that machine? Make sure that it does not
protect against mail worms.

1) When I NSLOOKUP my personal ISP, inch.com, it does locate it, and
it shows me their IP address. However,
2) When, from a command prompt, I say telnet inch.com, it responds
with "Connecting to inch.com... <then it takes a minute, then says
Could not open a connection to host on port 23: Connect failed. When
I try telnet inch.com 25, it replies with Could not open a connection
to host on port 25: Connect failed.
So DNS is working, but not telnet?
Thank you!

Back to basics:
1) Is DNS working properly? IE, can you locate MX records via
NSLOOKUP?
2) If #1 is Yes: lookup somebody's MX record and telnet to it (ie
telnet somebodys.mail.com 25) and see if you get the SMTP banner.
