Name resolution to/from NT domain |
|
|
Hi. It has been so long since I have worked with NT 4....
In preperation for migration testing I am using VM's to simulate a 2003
domain and an NT 4 domain. I want to establish a trust, so I need to get name
resolution working.
I can ping computer names, but not domain names for both domains. Therefore,
when i go to establish a trust, it can't find the domain.
Whats the best way to go about this?

You either need to have an operational WINS server or you can create entries
in the LMHOSTS files. You will need NetBIOS to be operational on the W2K3
domain controller(s) for this to work.

I have WINS installed on both sides. I tried creating a Domain Name record,
but it didn't seem to work

You shouldn't need to create anything. Do you have the WINS servers
replicating? The PDC should register itself in WINS with the special Netbios
name <domainname 1C> . Ping won't help you with this. It is a TCP/IP
utility, not Netbios.

So you would have the NT WINS replicating with the 2003 WINS? In the past I
have created WINS records for each domain in the opposite domains and it
worked.
That doesn't work now. When I go to create a trust, each domain can't fins
the other.

Just use one WINS Server for the whole entire thing. WINS is not Domain
Specific and it doesn matter what server OS you run it on. You might as well
run it on the newsest server OS.
