So, if one walks into managing a forest with no documentation of which was
created as the primary master, there isn't a way to figure it out? I was
looking through the KBs below before writing the discussion group but did not
find a way to determine which was the primary master in the articles.

Primary Master DNS?

It is on the SOA tab, and if the zones are AD integrated each server will
list itself as the primary master on the SOA tab.
This is because when the zone is store in active directory, it becomes a
multi-master system, where each zone is a master writable zone replicated
not through zone transfers, but through active directory.
