Does anyone know why a couple of Windows 2003 servers have disappeared from
the Network Browse list? We are still using the old NT domain (urgh) and are
beginning the move to AD. Our first step is to upgrade as many of our
servers as we can since the old ones are oldddddddddddd. Anyway, in building
the new Windows 2003 servers the servers show initially and after adding DHCP
server on a couple of the new boxes they disappeared from the browse listing.
We have checked everything we could think of to no avail..........

I need help... Not talking psychologically of course :)

Do the servers show up in their own browse list? If not
then make sure NetBIOS over Tcp/ip is enabled. Without
it they will disappear from the browse list. Also make sure
the firewall isn't enabled.

The firewall is not turned on and NetBIOS over Tcp/ip is enabled. Any other
ideas?

Of course but could you answer my first question? Do the servers
show up in their own list. Open a dos prompt and run "net view" on
the missing servers. Which machine(s) shows up in the list?

I have to admit the 1 liners are killing me. Do any machines show
up in the list e.g., all but the problem servers? If so then open a dos
prompt on each and run net config server. Look at the value of the
hidden field. Next from the dos prompt run ipconfig /all and note
the node type.

Thanks for your responses and help. Sorry, I was trying to avoid too much
verbage. It is the only server that is missing when NET VIEW is run.
IPCONFIG shows the Hidden field as No.

Some more info: It is the only server in one of our regional offices which
at one time had an NT 4 BDC, which it replaced. Other servers show up on the
list (PDC, BDCs, member servers; like the missing server a few of the other
member servers run on W2K3)

I have been telling the man who configured it that it must have a security
policy that is causing it to come uyp missing. But he says that the
configuration on on one of the servers that show up properly is identical to
the the missing server. They were both configured exactly the same.

I hope I've given you a clearer picture of the environment. Thanks again for
your help.

Is there any relation between the problem servers e.g., same remote
location? Things to try. You could run netmon on the problem machine
for at least 12 minutes and look for a host name announcement package,
this will tell you whether or not the problem servers are registering their
presence with the correct SMB, look for destination address. You could
also try reinstalling tcp/ip on a problem server then reboot and see if this
resolves your issue. Note it could take some time for the name to show up
in the browse list. A full browse cycle is something like 51 minutes but
that's
for a name to disappear, it is shorter for a name to appear. To reinstall
tcp/ip
have a look at the following:
