migration 2k to 2003? |
|
|
I have 3 old w2k DCs running a forest and need to replace the equipment due
to age. I'd also like to upgrade to 2003 in the process. I'd appreciate
anyone's thinking on the best way to play this shell game.
1) S=schema master, domain naming master, gcs, wins, dns
2) Da=pdc emulator, rid, infrastructure master
3) De=gcs, wins, dns
I really don't want to change the ips of wins or dns servers. I'd like to
get DNS moved up to 2003 to take advantage of conditional forwarding.
I'm inclined to run dcpromo on #3, remove it from the directory and build a
fresh piece of hardware with the same name and ip. Does this seem like a
reasonable approach and if so what would be my couple of steps? |

That is, what would be my next couple of steps after removing it from the
directory?
??Build a member server with the same name and ip, install DNS, and run
dcpromo??
Would the W2K DNS server (name here = S) play nicely with this upgraded one?
Just a few articles into researching this migration of hardware and software
and would appreciate thoughts about the best approach.

Kevin,
I like the idea of doing a dcpromo on number 3... deleting it from the
directory and then building a new piece of hardware. Once you have done a
dcpromo on the new box and installed dns, wins, gc etc you can transfer your
fsmo roles from number 2 to the new box, allowing you to work on number 2
without having to worry about too much.
Word of advice.. be carefull when messing with your DNS servers.. i.e., as
you down the old boxes, make sure your clients/servers are not still set up
to use them them for DNS. I only mention it because I have done it before.
