LCS PIC functionality |
|
|
Hi all,
As per another post here - i recently overcame some problems
with the LCS 2005 SP! PIC connector.
Now that its up and running though, i was disappointed to find that
only presence information and instant messaging was available - i was
assuming the whole gamut of messenger functionality would be available.
I havent been able to find a document that specifically states what
is/is not available between LCS 2005 clients and external (MSN etc)
clients - does one exist? and can anyone point me to it?
More importantly, should additional functionality be there and i have
an incorrect configuration? |

The PIC Datasheet only notes Presence, IM, and the ability to have corporate
and PIM contacts in the same
client.(http://www.microsoft.com/office/livecomm/prodinfo/publicimdatasheet.mspx)
Regarding the voice/video, or lack thereof, this is specifically noted in
the Live Communications Server 2005 Upgrading to Service Pack 1 and Enabling
Public IM Connectivity document. It is the last sentence in the first
paragraph of the "Enabling Public IM Connectivity" section (Page 48).

Ok, thanks for pointing me to that.
There is however this -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903056 - article which
would seem to indicate that you can, using peer to peer comms for the
additional services. (i found that one after posting this message)
Im not trying to say your wrong or anything, this just seems to
conflict with the part in the document you've mentioned.
Additionally, lets say that the article i've pointed to is one of these
"its in an article, but will only work with lots of ifs" - i noticed
this post -
http://groups.google.com.au/group/microsoft.public.livecomm.general/browse_thread/thread/1c721f098da03230?hl=en
which seems to hint that addressing the additional functionality may be
looked at very soon - while i realise any MS people wont comment on
that - anyone have any general speculation on a possible SP2/R2 or LCS
2005 that perhaps includes this functionality via the AP ? |

Re: LCS PIC functionality |

I am human...and am definitely prone to being wrong.
The remote users, to which they are speaking, are LCS 2005 SP1 remote users.
These are users, outside of the corporate firewall, which access the LCS
2005 server(s) internal to their environment.
They are not PIC/PIM users.
The problem you have with PIC is that the clients out there (MSN Messenger,
AIM, WM, Yahoo!) do not have common methods of messaging, sending voice,
sending video, signaling, messaging, etc. If I rememer correctly, the PIC
gateways do not allow signalling traffic to pass...but I may be mistaken.
If you want the definitive answer, and don't believe the documents, you can
always spend $245 and call Microsoft support...it will not offend me one
bit.

ahhh i see your point.
Thats rather disappointing.
Co-incidentally i have already logged a pss call with ms about the
initial issue (which is now resolved) - i did ask to clarify the
position on PIC functionality, but am yet to recieve a response...
I was under the mistaken assumption that internal messenger 5.1 clients
should be able to whiteboard etc with external messenger 5.1 clients,
even if it is p2p rather than via the AP - but if not, then so be it!
thanks for your help bob. |

Internal WM5.1 clients may be able to whiteboard, etc. with external WM5.1
clients, as long as they are not crossing the PIC (MSN to MSN or LCS to LCS,
but not LCS to MSN), uPNP is enabled on the firewall and router, and the
ports are open.
For more information regarding the ports...
http://bobchristian.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-messenger-and-ports.html
Yes, that generally means that a firewall could become a neat piece of swiss
cheese. It is also possible to lock down services to specific ports.
There are some applications which will proxy the connections, but I have not
utilized any for whiteboarding and application sharing across a firewall. I
have utilized the Radvision offerings for WM voice and video. I have seen
the Jasomi product as well.

Yer i got he impression you could LCS <-> MSN when i first saw the doco
about opening ports, but i understand why thats not the case.
I assume when your talking about radvisions offering your talking about
IMFirst - ? Can i ask what your opinion of the product is?
(Good/bad/ugly?)
Thanks. |

The unfortunate part of my job is that I see these products for a very short
amount of time.
The thing I liked about the Radvision offering was that we had 4 IM
sessions, with video and audio, and it was all software based. I haven't
utilized their product long enough to form a negative opinion...but I am
sure people have problems with their product.

As a follow-up... my tone was kind of harsh. The Radvision folks that I
have spoken with have always been sharp and professional. What I was trying
to say was that, while I did not have a problem with implementations of
their product, that doesn't indicate that it is foolproof. It is a good
product and the support folks that I talked to were really nice.
