Modem Sharing SBS 2003 |
|
|
I've just upgraded from SBS2000 to 2003 and have been caught out by the
removal of the modem sharing feature from SBS 2003.
I need to share a modem for several Natwest Bankline users - this used to
work in SBS 2000.
Can anyone recommend a 3rd Party product, or a way of installing the modem
sharing feature from SBS2000 on SBS2003 ? |

This one has been mentioned before around here:

But honestly the best thing you can do is to add a cheap modem and wire up
the few workstations that might need to use it.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for posting here!
Modem Sharing is not included due to some security reasons.
Changes from Small Business Server 2000 include removal of:
- Modem sharing
- TS in App Sharing mode (Remote admin mode still available)
Updates:
- Can now have up to 75 CALs
- SQL can now be used as the back end for your web site
I have also included some links that I think would help you:

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I do understand the security issues - but I do have to find a solution for a
business critical application that requires a modem and that used to work
with SBS2000.
I didn't mention here that I did find a COM port sharing application for a
reasonable cost
http://pcmicro.com/ModemServe/index.html
ModemServe 1 Port License.
Includes unlimited clients, and one year of support. MSLS1 $50
I've installed the eval and it would appear to do the job very well, only
problem is the NatWest Bankline application I need it for won't work with
it.
I am coming to the conlusion that hardwiring may be the most ecenomical
solution - especially when you take in to account all the hours I've already
put in to this - but I really don't want to be beaten by this. I
recommended to the client that they should upgrade and am now looking bad
because this application that used to work doesn't.
Has anyone looked at installing the modem sharing feature from sbs2000 on to
sbs2003 ? If I went down this route are there any licensing issues?

Re: Modem Sharing SBS 2003 |

Hi Ian,
Thanks for your update!
One thing I need to clarify, although we removed the modem sharing feature
in SBS 2003, we can share the modem by setup NAT to provide internet
connection for client computers. What we need do is to run CEICW wizard.
The CEICW wizard (Configure E-mail and Internet connection wizard) includes
configuring the network properties for both an internal and an external
network interface (if two network cards are used) as well as configuring
ISA Server 2000 as a gateway server, firewall, and web caching server, and
configuring Exchange for all e-mail. It also configures many of the local
server services such as DNS, DHCP, WINS and RRAS.
I suggest you refer to the following KB article to get detail information
about how to setup NAT to provide network connection:

Hi Gray,
Thanks for using SBS newsgroup!
The modem sharing feature is based on the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) service, the Windows Firewall/ICS service is
designed for sharing internet connection to provide convenience to access
internet. However it can not protect network powerfully.
The SBS 2003 provides Name and Address services (NAT) to provide internet
connection, in this way, the internal computers will not expose to External
network and it can not be easily attacked.

Re: Modem Sharing SBS 2003 |

Sorry Jenny this is incorrect information - it is not a NAT or ICS internet
connection sharing feature at all, please refer to the documentation that
comes with SBS 2000.
The modem sharing ability allows a user to connect to a remote modem and
treat it as if it is local, so they can dial directly to a Bank service for
example, not just internet.
It creates a virtual COM port connection for the PC to redirect ANALOG modem
requests to a Shared COM port (MODEM POOL) on the server.

You understand why they took modem sharing out?
It's a security issue and certainly not supported if you are asking
for
some reg hack.

I've just upgraded from SBS2000 to 2003 and have been caught out by
the
removal of the modem sharing feature from SBS 2003.
I need to share a modem for several Natwest Bankline users - this
used
to work in SBS 2000.
Can anyone recommend a 3rd Party product, or a way of installing
the
modem sharing feature from SBS2000 on SBS2003 ?

| Quote: | Well its taken some playing and some a lot of help from Time Traveller,
but I am very happy to report that it is possible to install the modem
sharing component from SBS 2000 on to my upgraded SBS2003 server. The
real bonus is it works with NatWest Bankline, unlike some of the
alternatives we tried.
The server is installed and configured using a slight variation on the
information here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q224791
Instead of running setup, install by adding a new Network service in
Control Panel, | Network Properties | Install | select Have Disk and
point to the Files in the ModemShare Folder on SBS2000 CD2.
XP clients are configured using the download and instructions on this
technote
