Odd Client Request... |
|
|
Hi,
I am implementing Microsoft CMS for a client who has absolutely no
technical abilities or background and is entirely unable to understand
web technology (hence the need for CMS). However, I have been asked by
this client to provide a list of "all the things it does, that is,all
the things you could put on a CMS website" so that the executive
stakeholders can figure out what they want on the site. I have tried
numerous times to explain that MCMS simply manages content and that the
content could be anything they want...that anything that can be done on
the internet can be on a CMS site...but to no avail. They want a list
and they will accept no less.
Has anyone else had requests like this, and how have you handled them.
I can't quite imagine trying to list all the possibilities of the
internet for them so I have been looking for some generic sales pitch
for MCMS that sounds gratifying enough for them. Haven't found one
yet...any suggestions?
Thanks,
ChrisM |

Thanks Stefan,
Yes, these are great 'sales pitch' type documents for MCMS and for most
clients these would do the trick. This client, however, is a bit of an
anomaly in that the driving force behind this project is the a
communications director that deals almost exclusively in print media
and PR. The articles below would simply baffle this person as she also
has no concept of the business relevance of ROI etc.
What she is asking for, as unrealistic as it is, is a comprehensive
list of the 'whizzy' things one might put on a web site and that can be
accomplished with a Microsoft CMS driven website. My repeated comments
of "surf the net and look at anything. We can do it. Maybe not out of
the box, but we can do it." are simply not clear enough for her. She
wants the list of what 'it' is...plain text, flash, streaming media,
java applets (with an explanation of what they are and what they do),
forms...'what kind?' she will ask, applications (again...'like what?').
Ack!
I guess this is less a Microsoft CMS question specifically, more a
question of how I should explain all the possible ways of disseminating
information on the internet. It is such a ridiculous question that I
find myself drawing a blank every time I sit down to write something.
I was hoping someone, somewhere may have a better way of phrasing 'you
can do anything you want'.
I'm a developer and I have a hard time wrapping me head around how
disconnected this client is from what she is requesting and what is,
for most people between the ages of 5 and 50 anyway, pretty common
knowledge. I just don't know what to say to her.
Sorry for the rant,
Chris
