Hi,

Monday, my main server crashed and now my dfs root on this machine does
not work anymore.

Background:

Server A: W2K DC with dfsroot pointing to D:\dfsroot (shared as shared$)
This gets linked to directories in D:\shared.

There is also server B with a dfsroot.

The problem is that D:\dfsroot on my DC is now just a normal folder,
and DFSUTIL /view responds with "not a dfs root"

When I fire up the Distributed File System tool, it doesn't show a root.

A strange thing: under D:\dfsroot (server A) there is a folder "X" with
documents, and this same folder is also on server B in dfsroot. This
folder gets replicated, but I cannot find a reference in the Distributed
File System tool on server B anywhere...

Can I just delete the D:\dfsroot folder and create a new dfs on my DC?
Can I move folder "X" to D:\shared on server A and create a link in the
new dfsroot ?

Eventlog, Netdiag and DCdiag do not show any problems.

Thank you,
Dick

If you don't plan on recovering the old root yes.

No need. If you are going to create a new root just do so. Don't
complicate it by moving configuration files from a previous root into this
one.

You might want to check what objects are underneath your computer object in
ADSIEdit.msc. There might be subscription objects which require deletion
(but make sure they're not SYSVOL).

Great, thanks for the info. It's all working, and less complicated than
I thought :)
