I am trying to figure out how to set the Host Integration 2000 End User
Client to install as a service so I can run it using a standard account. We
are currently in the process of moving the HIS 2000 servers off our domain
and want to set it up so that the end user clients can connect using a local
account on the HIS Servers. We had this setup before with SNA 3.0 and using
the SNA 3.x client, but I cannot find where to do this in 2000. I have read
that you can run the end user client in 2004 as a service, but I can find no
information regarding the end user client for HIS 2000.

Tom-

If you need to run SNABase as a service than you will need to install the
HIS 2000 Admin client. I believe you can choose not to install the SNA
Manager so that you don't have to give your users any more functionality
than they have with the end user client, just the ability to run as a
service.

In HIS 2004 we now only have one client and you can choose to run it as a
service or as an application after you install it (you choose during the
configuration wizard).

I have attempted to use the HIS 2004 client and run it as a service. I am
confused because it creates two local groups, then prompts for an account.
How I want to set this up is, have a local account on the HIS 2000 server and
have everyone use that local account name to run that service. When we used
SNA 3.0 and the clients, we had a local account on the SNA server and all
clients were configured to use that account and password for connection, we
edited the win.ini file I think. I am trying to do this using the 2004
client and having no luck. I thought I had it configured correctly, but now
I get the error "Host Integration Server - ERROR #1000, The service called
SNABASE is not configured in the registry as an SNA service". Are there any
instructions on setting this up for clients to connect to a HIS server
without domain authentication?

Tom,

You can't run a service using a local account from another machine. You could
try running it under a user account on the local machine with the same name and
password. That *might* work.

Another alternative would be to use TN3270 rather than 3270 (if all you need is
3270 comms) as that doesn't need/use NT authentication.

But why don't you want to have the HIS servers in a trusted domain?

To add to this (sorry for the delay) HIS is designed to be used on a domain
environment. This is why connections from the client to the server have to
be authenticated. As Neil mentions, the only "workaround" to this has been
to configure the same local account with the same exact password on the
server and on the client(s). One thing to keep in mind is that there are two
connections made from a client to a server. The first is the SNABase
connection (or "sponsor" connection as we call it sometimes) which is used
to get a list of resources in the subdomain. When you configure SNABase to
run as a service you can give this a specific account to run under. The
second connection is the actual application connection. So if you're logged
in as joeuser and you run a 3270 emulator the connection to the server
happens under your user context. This would mean you would also need that
account and password setup on the server, but one way around this might be
to do a Run As in windows to run the 3270 emulator under the same specific
user credentials that you have SNABase running under. Either way, we don't
have any instructions written up how to do this because this is not an
intended scenario.

As Neil also says, if you only need to display and print sessions you may
want to consider using TN3270 which would elminate the need for any HIS
client software on the systems.
