Passing info between Lists |

Being new to SharePoint I have the following problem.
I have two lists ( position and canadates) that I need to pass data between,
specifically if a position is availible and we get a canadate we want to
enter the position number on the canadate record and have other fields (ie
Title, location, etc) from the position record to be automatically filled in
on the canadate record in the appropiate fields.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
