Hi,

Having a strange problem, which I initially posted on the
Microsoft.public.windows.server.networking group, however I think this group
maybe able to provide more specific help.

We have about 20 users, who are mobile, in that they use their laptops in
and out of the office, and an regular basis. Now for some reason, since
Friday, when users take their laptops home, or on the road, they can no
longer get net access. However if they connect to our VPN, and try net
access, then it works.
I also have the problem on my laptop, and I've done some testing. I've found
I can ping web sites via their IP address, but not hostname, so I assume
it's a resolution problem. I've run ethereal to see what's happening, and it
seems that when you try to access a website, the machine tries to query our
internal office DNS server. This would explain why you get net access over
the VPN. As I have 2 network cards, I've disabled my wired LAN card that I
use in the office, leaving just my home wireless card enabled. I've added my
ISPs DNS servers manually, (rather than having them assigned automatically
from my DHCP ADSL router), but it still tries to access the internal DNS,
I've done an IPCONFIG /flushdns & /registerdns, and tried IPCONFIG /release
& /renew which didn't help. I've even tried re-installing TCP/IP using the
netsh int ip reset command, as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357. However
nothing seems to work. I'm now stuck, as to what to do next. Everyone's home
internet access was working fine before Friday. And I can't think what has
changed.

We're running Windows 2000/XP clients, Windows 2003 domain. People's home
connections vary, from ADSL, to cable, to good old dial up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ben

OK, please ignore the above post. I've just fixed it! Some idiot put a group
policy entry, with the internal DNS server IP.
