I want to cluster Exchange 2003. As I understand it, I need to have a drive
that is attached to both servers (iSCSI, SCSI, Fiber). But is it possible
to create a cluster that stores data on a shared network resource instead
(such as \\server\share)? I am looking for a cheap solution so I can begin
some testing before we make a decision on the SAN storage.

Excellent, testing is a great idea, but why buy hardware? Try either Virtual
Server 2005 or VMWare, both work great!

Cheers,

Rod

hi jim!

start testing with iscsi. so you can install ms iscsi initiator on both
cluster nodes and for example some freeware (for testing purpose) from
www.rocketdivision.com/wind.html for the "iscsi-target" part.

Since you brought it up, are you suggesting that we build a production
cluster in a virtual environment? or are you merely suggesting we do the
testing in a virtual environment?

I ask for the sake of a professional opinion as to whether it is ever
advisable to run production servers in a virtual environment as a long term
strategy. In our case, we are a VAR providing our own branded servers, so
the expense of hardware is greatly reduced. However, we do not build any
existing external storage solution that would fit here...

I meant testing and only testing. Its all about Microsoft support.

I do not see anything wrong with using Virtual Server for a production
machine that is not clustered :)
