DFS Replication in WS2003 R2 |
|

Does anyone know if replication of user profiles via DFS Replication in
WS2003 R2 will be a supported scenario?

Hard to call. Jill is better suited to answer that. I'll poke around and
get back to you...

Is that to say that replicating roaming user profiles is not currently a
supported scenario? I've been doing it for a month now and haven't had any
problems...
Should I be worried?

I don't think it isn't supported. It's just that it isn't recommended in a
number of different environments. If you've implemented it and it's
working, that's great. Some environments will handle it fine. It depends
on the business and the infrastructure.
In 2003 R2 it'll be so much more efficient that a bunch of these problems
will go away.

The official word is do NOT use FRS with roaming profiles. Here is what an
MS tech told me on the private groups:
================================
<snip>please note that replicating Roaming profiles via FRS
to multiple link targets is not supported and can cause potential problems
for example, FRS overloaded and even data loss.
Therefore, Microsoft does not support storing roaming profiles on DFS
shares that are replicated by using FRS. For more details on this DFS FAQ
site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfsfaq.mspx
(See the question: "Can I use DFS with Offline Files and redirected My
Documents folders?" in the paragraph called "Managing DFS.")
===============================
My recollection was that when Windows 2000 first came out, MS supported
roaming profiles on FRS, but later retracted that. Could be mistaken; that
was a long time ago!
We are DEFINITELY having problems with FRS in WS2003SP1 for roaming
profiles. The larger the profile the worse it gets. And even small profiles
that have a few large, frequently-changing files in them (like 5MB
ntuser.dat files) are also problems. Actually, 100% of our FRS roaming
profile problems involve ntuser.dat.
I join you in hoping that FRS 2.0 will be usable--and officially
supported--for roaming profiles, because we really need it!
