event ID 11163 on workstation |
|
|
A resource record for the computer name of the DC is not registered in the
DNS database.
Any input much appreciated.
Thanks,

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DnsApi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11163
Date: 10/19/2005
Time: 9:05:36 PM
User: N/A
Computer: BT100
Description:
The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network
adapter
with settings:
Adapter Name : {544DE1D1-400E-484F-ABA8-1DEDF617F484}
Host Name : BT100778P2
Primary Domain Suffix : XXXX.XXX.XXX.XX
DNS server list :XX.XX.XX.XX, XX.XX.XX.XX
Sent update to server : XX.XX.XX.XX
IP Address(es) :XX.XX.XX.XX
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS
server failed the update request. The most likely cause of this is that the
authoritative DNS server required to process this update request has a lock
in place on the zone, probably because a zone transfer is in progress.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its
settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems
still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

You edited out the most important part, the DNS server list. I assume that
since you edited it out, it is not the DCs own IP address?
Active Directory requires DNS and the DC will attempt to register its
records in the DNS server in the DNS server list on all NICs. It is
recommended that the DC host its own zone, in it own DNS server. No ISP or
external DNS server should be used in TCP/IP Properties of any interface on
any AD domain member.

Yes. The DNS server lists are not DCs own IPs. |
Primary DNS are running on CNR (Cisco) with DHCP. These servers not a part
of the domain. All the servers and Workstations are pointing to the servers
as a primary DNS
Also, we are two domains structure:
DomainA has 5DCs/DNS
DomainB has 2DCs/DNS
AD integrated
On the workstation when we do ipconfig /all, it shows new IP with it’s
hostname which is shown on the primary DNS/DHCP servers, however, on the DCs,
it shows old IP with it’s hostname.
Also, this problem is randomly happening.
I am new with this environment and DNS…. I do appreciate your help!
Thanks, |

Point the DC to its own address and point all workstations to the DC.

The idea implementing CNR DNS is that minimized DNS traffic on among DCs. All
DCs’ DNS forward set to the CNR DNS. Pointing the DC to it’s own IP not an
options for me now. Is there any other solutions???
Thanks,

One more thing I’d like to add. It seems workstation gets a new IP from DHCP,
however, the workstation is not able to update the new ip with it's hostname
in DNS database; therefore, on the DNS database, it shows it’s old IP with
it’s hostname.
Also, we tried ipconfig/ registerdns on the workstation, but it did not
update the right IP on the DNS database either
Thanks,
