I have an issue where I have a windows 2000 sbs machine running sp4. IE
doesn't work. Keeps coming up with a dns error. I can ping addresses and they
resolve. Just for kicks I install Firefox and it accesses the internet no
problem. So I'm assuming this hs to be an IE issue.

I installed new version of IE. Installed the latest service pack for it.
Still nothing. This wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that I can't do
my windows updates. Anyone see this before?

Firewall client isn't installed on server and all other pc's get out no
problem so I don't think it's an ISA problem either.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check the LAN settings in IE. Does the proxy point to the server and port
8080?

Yes. All the settings are exactly the same as they are in firefox which
works. I actually got it working by installing the firewall client which I
wanted to avoid. Either way, I was able to accomplish my goal of using
windows update so...

DO NOT INSTALL THE FIREWALL CLIENT ON THE SERVER!!!!

Uninstall it right now. You are installing a backdoor on your server.

when the IE attempt to reach a web page fails, what happens if you click the
refresh button?

If the page appears after a refresh please look at this article and patch

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;331906

good luck
