Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting back.
From your reply, I understand that you excluded System State and the backup
was successfully. Just double confirm, did you backup to tape or local
drive?
I also suggest that we only backup the System State and see whether the
issue will occur again. If yes, please send me the Backup logs for
research:
1) The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.
2) The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.
3) On the server, run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), check whether
there is any error. If yes, double click it, click the Copy button and
paste the full content to the Newsgroup.
I appreciate your time and cooperation, and am looking forward to hearing
from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Hi and thanks for posting back ! :)
My SBS came with SP1 allready on the CD's and were installed during initial
installation of the server.
As to the other updates I got them all installed except the Windows XP
Client Deployment
Don't think I need this one either as I'm currently just having W2K

But hey , some good news today , the server was able to run a sucsessfull

I modified the backupscript to not include "System State" and it all runs

Does that give any clues away ?
Hope this brings us to the core of the problem, and hoping for a solution

What exactly does system state contain that makes my backup fail ?

Hey and thanks again for your followup :)
I allready had all the patches that were released for SBS , Sharepoint &
Exchange installed.
Does this mean I don't need those hotfixes ?
If so , do I have to contact Microsoft to get them , as I see no
download
link ?
Server is brand new , so no updates from hardware vendor.
I'm getting a bad feeling here it won't be solved and I have to live
with
no
backups :\
I must say you did an excellent job trying to help me out tho :)
Hope you still got some cards up your sleeve...

Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting back!
Since we have been handling this issue for many days, I would like to make
a summary of the post for your reference:
Problem Description
=============
You are running SBS 2K3 SP1, fails to run Backup wizard and NTBackup to
local hard disk and tape from day One.
Possible Causes
==========
From the Backup Log, I noticed following error information:
********************
The device reported an error on a request to read data from media.
Error reported: Bad data.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
Error: The device reported an error on a request to mount the media.
Error reported: Unknown error.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
Error: The device reported an error on a request to mount the media.
Error reported: Unknown error.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
Error: D: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
********************
From the error message, it seems that it is a hardware issue.
Actions Taken
=========
1. KB887975
2. KB817765
3. Rerun Backup Wizard to local hard disk.
4. Application Event Log.
5. How Volume Shadow Copy Service Works
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/TechR
ef/2b0d2457-b7d8-42c3-b6c9-59c145b7765f.mspx
My Plan
=====
1. I suggest that we perform a Clean Boot on the SBS Server to see whether
there is any third party software interference.
a. Click Start->Run, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotation marks) and
click OK.
b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click the
"Startup" tab.
c. Click to clear all the check marks from the list box under "Startup".
d. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and
then click the "Disable All" button to disable the non-Microsoft services.
e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.
f. After restarting, please check whether this issue still exists.
2. I suggest that we rerun NTBackup and backup to LOCAL HARD DISK again,
and then gather the LATEST backup log.
[Note]: Please schedule a downtime, and temporarily disable any third party
software on your server. For example, anti-virus and firewall.
-- To manually run NTBackup, please see:
a. Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then press Enter. The Backup
or Restore Wizard launches.
b. On the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced Mode.
c. Click the Backup tab. From the Job menu, choose Load Selections.
d. In the File Name box type %sbsprogramdir%\backup.
e. Click Small Business Backup Script.bks to select, and click Open.
f. Please choose your backup tape as backup destination.
g. On the Backup tab, click Start Backup.
h. Can the problem be reproduced?
-- If the issue persists, please help to gather Backup logs and send it to
my mailbox: v-branee@microsoft.com.
a. The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.
b. The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.
3. Also, please help to gather System Event log. To do so, on the server,
run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), right click System, save it as
..evt file. Send the file to my mailbox.
4. As you have already running SP1, so you do not need to install KB 817688
-> 833167-> 884848.
I greatly appreciate your time and cooperation, and am looking forward to
hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Hello Ariel,
Thank you for posting back!
Please take your time to perform all the steps.
By the way, you mentioned "we had that same problem on our old NT server",
I need to know whether you old NT Server ran on the same machine as your
current SBS 2K3 Server.
Thanks a lot for your time and I am looking forward to hearing from you!

My Plan
=====
[Note]: Please schedule a downtime, and temporarily disable any third
party
software on your server. For example, anti-virus and firewall.
-- To manually run NTBackup, please see:
a. Click Start, click Run, type ntbackup, and then press Enter. The Backup
or Restore Wizard launches.
b. On the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard page, click Advanced
Mode.
To do so, on the server,
run "eventvwr" (without quotation marks), right click System, save it as
.evt file. Send the file to my mailbox.
4. As you have already running SP1, so you do not need to install KB
817688
-> 833167-> 884848.
I greatly appreciate your time and cooperation, and am looking forward to
hearing from you!
Best regards,
Brandy Nee

Hi and thanks for posting back ! :)
My SBS came with SP1 allready on the CD's and were installed during
initial
installation of the server.
As to the other updates I got them all installed except the Windows XP
Client Deployment
Don't think I need this one either as I'm currently just having W2K
clients.
But hey , some good news today , the server was able to run a sucsessfull
backup during the night ! 8)
I modified the backupscript to not include "System State" and it all runs
fine now ?
Does that give any clues away ?
Hope this brings us to the core of the problem, and hoping for a solution
now
What exactly does system state contain that makes my backup fail ?
