Hi,

We changed ISP's the other day and after re-configuring the router with the
new settings, I cannot access anything externally from our server (PDC). It
is one of 2 DNS servers - the other server works just fine. And, all clients
in the lan can access external addresses just fine. Since the problem server
also functions as an Exchange server, messages are hanging up in the queue.
I've been getting SMTPSVC errors saying that the DNS server cannot be
contacted.

I can ping the internal and external interfaces on the router from this
server, but nothing beyond that.

I am totally stumped and any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

Since you say the other machines are working, but not this one, the first
thing I would ask myself is what is different on this machine compared to
the others? Is there a firewall in place, or the firewall service enabled
that may have got misconfigured? Zone Alarm? Firewall on the router? What
else is installed on this DC other than Exchange? Other services? What else
may have been changed? Did the internal IPs too, or just the router's
external interface info? Is it the same router or a different router? If you
change the IP of the non-workign machine, does it work? Any errors on this
specific machine in it's Event logs?

Thanks for the reply..

* Windows firewall is turned off
* This is also an Exchange server, DNS server, DHCP server, SQL server
* No change to internal IP's. Just the external IP and gateway
* Same router as before
* Not ready to try and change IP on this machine, since it is a critical
system
* Only consistent errores are SMTPSVC errors saying it can't connect to the
DNS server.

I guess what I was implying is to check the obvious, since obiously this
*appears* to be more of a networking issue than a domain controller of DNS
issue, from your description. That was why I was implying to look at the
obvious possibilities. A couple more may seem prudent to look at as well (I
know they are basic things, but sometimes we have to revert to the basics),
such as subnet mask, fat fingered IP address, or even the gateway address. I
don't think it would be DNS because I am assuming if you had configured your
machines to only use the internal DNS (as in AD it should always be), and
the Roots or forwarders would handle resolution (whether you changed the
forwarders or not, they will usually work with your old ISP's DNS in most
cases).

But if you have a private IP range, then of course all I mentioned above is
a moot point assuming nothing needs to be changed internally.

Here's an important question: Did you recently run a hotfix? The latest last
week causes problems if you had altered the default permissions on the
system drive, which causes havoc with the MSDTC. Read this and see if it
applies.

One thing I would like to make a humble comment on is this specific DC
appears to be overloaded with services. A DC has one main thing that goes
against putting other services on it, which is a DC disables the write cache
on the harddrive. This is to insure integrity with the AD database. This
action imposes about a 10% performance hit. Not sure if you were aware of
this "feature". It cannot be changed on a DC. Installing Exchange can slow a
DC down heavily, due to both Exchange being overbearing, and the write cache
being disabled. Then running SQL on it take another hit. I can understand if
this is SBS. Like I said, this is just a friendly comment...
