Xp registers its computer names to the DDNS servers (A.D) and we also have a
Wins Server. I understood that we no longer need Wins Sever unless there are
old applications which have Netbios dependency.

My question is to understand at what point does the client tries to use Wins
for resolution. Let's say if i ping "computer1", is it using DNS for name
resolution or is it using Netbios? If i does a drive mapping Net use w:
\\Server1\public, is it using Wins or DNS?

Thks,
Guy

It's basically this. A ping "computer1" will use WINS first if WINS servers
are listed under TCP/IP properties of the network adapter. If WINS servers
are not listed there, it has no choice but to use the DNS Search Suffix
order. For \\Server1\public the same principle applies. Now anytime you
use a fully-qualified name like ping computer1.yourdomain.com or Net use w:
\\Server1.yourdomain.com\public, DNS will always be used.

One of these "old" applications is Network Places, if you have multiple
subnets, you need WINS to fully populate Network Places with computers from
all subnets.
