Please I help with this problem I have with W2k3.
I have this new W2k3 Server and want to give access to users in the
subdirectory only. The problem is when users have READ ONLY access in the
Root directory they encounter 'File Access Denied' although users have all
the permissions / shares / control in the subdirectory. The problem disappear
only when I add 'Change' permission in the root directory. This is a quite a
risky setup because users will be able to anything in the root directory. I
have tried this many times.

Any possible solution?

Many thanks to you guys...

A default installation is already pretty secure for W2003 for ntfs in the
root folder which gives users read/list/execute permissions only. I would
try setting it back to that or at least giving them list permissions also.
If problems still persist you can restore permissions for the root folder
with the rootsec.inf security template either using the Security
Configuration and Analysis mmc snapin tool or using secedit command line
tool and start over. --- Steve
