This month when I do my usual outine of going to the Wndows Update site to
download suggested security fixes, it is only showing IE6. It appears that I
*must* install this update before I can view the selection of other
hotfixes. I'm reluctant ot upgrade the browser software on servers since its
not really used much. Does anyone have experience of updateing IE6 on the
SBS 2000 server itself..is it safe to apply etc???

Yes, you should upgrade IE on your SBS server to IE6, due to the enhanced
security of IE6 over IE5.
