As i have stated before I am a newcomer to MSCS so please excuse my
ignorance, but how is an active/active cluster configuration even possible if
only one host can have control of (and direct access to) the shared storage
device at a time?

In order to have an active/active implementation, you must have two virtual
servers and configure them so one VS runs on one node and the other VS runs
on the other node.

....and to elaborate on Russ's answer, you'll want to size / scale these
server nodes appropriately so that one node could run all the clustered
resources at one time, if needed...kinda' the point of a cluster, right? :)

Russ touched on this and I thought I would elaborate further. You need to
understand how Microsoft defines "Active/Active" as opposed to other
vendor's definition of the phrase. Microsoft defines Active/Active as both
cluster nodes actively servicing cluster resources. That's it.

So one cluster node can service your database and the other could service a
file share resource and this would be considered active/active in MSCS. To
be an "Active/Passive" cluster, one node would service all cluster resources
while the other node would remain idle. If your cluster node is not idle, it
is considered an active cluster node.

Active/Active in other operating systems or clusters can mean that both
cluster nodes servicing the same application or resource simultaneously.
This is not how Microsoft cluster works and is not how Microsoft defines the
term.

Hope this make sense.

Regards,
John
