I am having a problem with Symantec AV 10, which may be connected to
ourlicencing configuration. I need to know if this is correct/working before
seeing if the error is elsewhere.

I am running SBS2003 standard with SP1 and have a W2K server SP4 in the
domain. This is running BES Server 3.6, MSDE, Exchange System Manager and
the Symantec AV Client.

After installing the AV, the W2K server runs for up to a day normally and
then starts producing Error 213 Replication of license information failed
because the License Logging Service on server \\HARVEY could not be
contacted. At the same time the AV client is no longer able to pull AV
definitions from the SBS Server.

Licence logging service is running on both machines.

License Settings.

SBS shows 15 installed licences (Client User CAL)

W2K Server is configured as Per Seat

Licensing Products View shows 0 Backoffice, 750 Exchange Server per Server
(0 reached) and 20 Windows Server, per server (7 reached)

Server Browser shows the licenses on the SBS Server, with W2K server per
Seat, but no licences of its own.

Hi Msmulian,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Based on my research, the event 213 can occur if the License Logging
Service (LLS) on one server cannot communicate with a License Master
server. This error message is unrelated to the Terminal Service Licensing
service. To troubleshoot this problem efficiently, please refer to the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. Please ensure that the
licensing server is configured properly and the License logging service is
set to automatically on the server.

Hi Crina,

Thanks for your input. I have reset the licensing as set out in
327644 and LLS link in 296681(it was correct but I changed it away and
changed it back to force it through).

In respect of 198132.this refers to "verify that the LLS server can
establish a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) connection with the License
Master server over the network". Can you advise how I can test this?

As noted below, theserrors typically only start after the server has
been running for between 24 and 26 hours.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply.

Would you please help me confirm the following information?

1. Does the problem persist after you configured the W2K server per 327644?
2. If you disable the AV software, does this help?

Regarding the RPC issue, you can test it using the following method:

1. Test the connection using another application that will use RPC:

1) You can right click My Computer and select Manage.
2) Right click the Computer Management (Local) and select Connect to
another computer and try to connect to SBS.
3) If you can connect, RPC should have been created.

2. You can also use the RPC ping utility to test the connections. You can
refer to the following KB article:

with
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831051

Hope it helps and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Crina,

In respect of your questions

1. The problem persists
2. I will remove the AV software and see what happens.

In regard to the RPC.

By right clicking My Computer and Manage, I can connect to the SBS server
(192.168.xxx.xxx)

I have run RPCDUMP /i from BLACKBERRY (W2K server) to the SBS server and get
some connections pinging successfully and others (LRPC) which do not.

Unfortunately I do not know if the ones that fail have any bearing on the LS
link.

Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply.

Based on my research and discussion with other experienced engineer, we
find a same issue and there is a workaround:
You should disable LLS on the member server.

Hope it helps and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you mean the AV client is still no longer able to pull AV definitions
from the SBS Server? If so, we can try to disable the Windows Firewall on
the Windows XP computers to see if it helps. You can do so as following:

1. Install the SBS 2003 Update on your SBS 2003 server for Windows XP SP2
from the following page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D70097C2-4317-40E0-
B7DA-FEB52C6B6386&displaylang=en

For more info regarding this fix, see:

872769 You cannot configure Windows Firewall settings or Security Center
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=872769

2. Install the 842933 hotfix on your SBS 2003 server from the following
page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=532A4CD0-F2CE-4FA7-
92AB-AC336AD18409&displaylang=en

For more info regarding this fix, see:

842933 "The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has
been
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=842933

After installing the above 2 hotfixes, please use the following steps to
edit the GPO and release the server restriction of firewall.

1. Start -> Administrative Tools -> Group Policy Management.
2. Expand Forest -> Domains -> Your Domain.
3. Right click the Small Business Server Windows Firewall and click Edit.
4. Computer configuration>Administrative templates>Network>Network
connections> Windows Firewall> Domain Profile.
5. In "Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections" should be set to
"Not Configured".
6. Run Gpupdate /force on your XP2 client.
7. Logon and logoff your client and test your issue again.

Additional, the following white paper is for your reference to configure
the Windows XP SP2 firewall in SBS domain.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Small Business Server

Hi Crina,

No the problem is nothing to do with the firewall. In practice the AV
definitions are pulled successfully from the SBS Server for 24-36 hours, then
the AV software seems to lock up.

I am investigating this directly with Symantec and am trying their
recommendation. I will know more if I have a solution next week.

If you are interested in the solution/outcome (which is now really a Symantec
problem), please let me know.

Best regards,

Martin
