HELP - Can't Browse Network Neighborhood in a Domain |
|
|
We have a single domain with 6 domain controllers. We just opened a new
branch and we set up a domain controller down there. It has WINS and DNS
running on it as well. They appear to be functioning normally. However,
when I go to browse in My Network Places, all I can see is the name of my
Domain. When I try to go into it, it tells me that I do not have the
permissions neccesary to browse the network. I am doing this from the domain
controller. Here are my TCP/IP settings on the remote DC I can't browse from:
IP Address - 10.1.40.10
Mask - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - 10.1.40.1
Primary DNS - 10.1.40.10 (pointing to itself)
Secondary - 100.100.100.9
WINS Server - 10.1.40.10 (also pointing to itself)
NETBios over TCP/IP is Enabled
This same symptom is on all the workstations in that remote locations as
well. I can access all PC's on my network using the UNC path and by IP
address. My only issue is the ability to browse. I am pulling my hair out
and REALLY need some help.
Thanks!!! |

Make sure local WINS registers [1b] on the remote WINS so that you can browse over WAN.

Also, this record is in the WINS database: --__MSBROWSE__-
Is this something that should be there? i am such a novice when it comes to
WINS I am pulling my hair out, SIGH!!!....

Re: HELP - Can't Browse Network Neighborhood in a Domain |

Hi Robert,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I neglected to tell you about my
WINS set up. There is a WINS server at each branch. Each of the remote
braches are set to replicate to the main branch, like a hub and spoke setup.
All are set to Push/Pull Replication Partners. Now, in desperation, I
completely wiped out all WINS services on all the servers. I re-installed
WINS in our main branch first then set up the branches one at a time, setting
up replication. NOW, when I set up the last branch, which is the new one,
the records for the that local server were not registering to its own WINS
(or any other for that matter). In other words, after I installed WINS on
that server, it's records did not show up in WINS. How is that possible? I
tripled checked the TCP/IP configs and it is in fact pointing to itelf for
WINS resolution yet it's own records are not in the database. So in that
banch, I can still not browse the conputers across the WAN, only on the LAN.
Also, no multi-homed PC's anywhere on the network.

Correction - My Domain Master domain controller has two nics on it but the
second one is disabled. I don't see the 1b domain record you spoke of before
in WINS. How can I re-register this Domain controller in WINS? Where should
I go from here?

The only reasons I can think of for a DC to not register as a browse
master in WINS are
1. Netbios over TCP/IP not enabled.
2. Registry key ISDOMAINMASTER set to false.
3. Computer browser service stopped.

Re: HELP - Can't Browse Network Neighborhood in a Domain |

Bill, thanks for the advice. Actually, after rebooting the Domain Master, it
registered it's 1b record and the browse list finally populated (in the
remote location as well, woo hoo).
Now, my only issue is that remote server isn't showing up in Network
Neighborhood. It's record is in WINS and registered itself dynamically but
the computer object isn't there. AND, that server is a DC and the WINS
server for that location, with it pointing to itself for WINS resolution.
Any reason anyone can think of for that?
