Good Morning Group!

I wonder if anyone has had any experience in creating application Maps using
MOM? BY Application Maps, I mean a diagramatic representation of an
application or service (NOT a Windows service).

Using Computer Groups, I am trying to create a "Messaging" map, and have it
supported by Exchange, K-Vaut, DNS, Blackberry and other sub-services. While
I can add servers themselves to the hierarchy, and have the map affected by
their state, I'd like to create a computer group object that depends ONLT on
specific services on a server, not the whole server (which is what I get when
I add the computer to the "Included Server" list.

For example, I'd like to have the "DNS" computer group depend ONLY on the
DNS services within a certain server, and not on eveything else MOM watches
on that server (like Insight Manager, etc.).

Is this type of service map design possible? Do I have to create my own
computer groups with corresponding rules groups, with management packs to
monitor ONLY the services I want?

BTW, if anyone is familiar with Service Designer in HP Openview Operations,
it is THIS type of functionality I am trying to EEK out of MOM.

Thanks for reading this, and ALL comments are valued!

Have a great day!

What I have done is locate registry entries that identify certain services
and create custiom attributes out of them. I then add them to the crtieria
of my custom computer groups. You can also re-use some of them management
pack attributes for the windows stuff like DNS, DHCP, etc.

OK, I will look into that. But, can I use that technique to make sure the
server icon ONLY goes red with the specific service has failed, or will it go
red if OTHER services on that server fail?

Thanks, Steve!

You can still send notifications to individual groups per rule. That might
be more what you want.

It would go red for any computer group that has that machine in its list.

Thanks. I already have directed notifications working, but I was simply
trying to get a more granular map created.
