I have a relatively new SPS installation where I've all of a sudden started
to get this error every time I do a search:

"No results are available due to a network failure. Please contact the
portal's administrator."

I have found posts saying that it could be caused by missing profile
properties. I have, however, NOT added, deleted or changed any of the
profile properties.

When performing a content update of the index, the log says the following:

"Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 cannot crawl the content
because the property cache is not available. Ensure that the instance of the
Microsoft SQL Server service (MSSQLSERVER) is running, or restart the
service."

All the relevant services are definitely running and I have tried restarting
the services and the whole server various times with no luck.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing it? Any tips for
troubleshooting?

Thanks,
Kristian

I would look at the log files found in <drive>:\program files\sharepoint
portal server\logs\ You will want to look at the w3wp logs and the
mssearch logs. It is possible that you will find the answer to this problem
in the w3wp log. I have seen this problem before when someone has deleted
the work phone property from the system where data is being imported from
ad. Even if you don't import from AD there are certain properties are
required. If you have deleted a property then you will need to add it back.
This is only a guess but you should be able to find the information you seek
in the log files.
