Creating a new cluster destroys array |
|
|
I'm having an....interesting issue.
This is my first Windows cluster, so it's entirely possible that I'm
being an idiot, but I did follow the instructions step by step so
hopefully somebody can help me with this.
I have one brand new server with a fresh install of Windows 2003
enterprise edition (fully patched) which is intended to be the primary
node of a cluster.
I also have one brand new domain controller (same OS)
Hooked up to a PERC 3 (clusterable) raid card is a Dell Powervault 210S
with 5 drives. The first 2 are RAID1 with 2 partitions, and the other 3
are RAID 5 with one partition.
When I go to Cluster Administrator and try to create a new cluster, I
get through the configuration and click to go ahead and create the
cluster. At some point in the creation process it fails. It also
destroys the array. None of the previously mounted drives are
accessible and I have to reinitialize the array from the BIOS before
they can be used again.
Any ideas what would cause this?!?
Thanks. |

Are you saying you are trying to cluster a machine that is already a Domain
Controller? If so, please don't. You will continue to get very interesting
results going down that path.
What error/details do you get when it fails? Event log messages, message
from the wizard, anything helpful.
Cheers,
Rod

How were the volumes created originally? Also, skip trying to use multiple
partitions on a single logical volume...not a good performance idea
anyway...

RE: Creating a new cluster destroys array |

Did you set the 210S Disk array to be in Cluster mode? I believe this is
done via a switch on the back of the hardware. Further, did you put the PERC
3 controller cards in Cluster mode? When you boot the system and see the
controller card firmware you will want to hit CTRL-M. In the resulting menu
click on Objects then Adapter. In the Adapter settings check to see if there
is a CLUSTER setting. By default it is set to DISABLED. You will want to
set it to ENABLED. Also, you may need to set the Initiator ID to 6 and the
controller card on the other server to 7. Repeat the cluster setting on the
controller card of the other server. If you don't do this, the drives will
erroneously be marked as failed, odd configuration issue will occur, and
cluster services won't start.
Please note that my instructions are based on experience with DELL hardare
of slightly different models, so please make sure that you check the
documentation and view the menus in the firmware carefully. Also, make sure
that you have the most recent firmware loaded on the controller cards.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions. I had pulled the PERC card and
the array out of a machine we are retiring where it was already
clustered, so I didn't bother checking that it maintained its settings.
So it actually wasn't in cluster mode. Once I turned that on,
everything works fine.
On the plus side my original guess panned out. On the minus side, that
guess was that I was being an idiot ;-)
Thanks again everybody. |

I disagree, an idiot would try the same thing over and over again and never
either ask for help or find help. Glad you are fixed.
