Mail Server Alias and Old Server |
|
|
I have created somewhat of a dilemna. I installed a new mail server this
week, and created an alias in DNS. We basically removed the SRV record for
the old mail server, and added the Alias to point the old name to the new
server . The old server is Windows 2000 Server and the new server is Windows
2003. Both the old server and the new one are Domain controllers. The
problem is that I need to transfer the Operations Roles and demote the old
server now, and I'm not sure how it will effect things to turn it back on.
The network admin thinks it may really confuse things. Will it put/try to
put the SRV record back in DNS automatically - you can't have both an Alias
and SRV records for one box right? Also, without a SRV record in DNS is Role
transfer and demotion going to work. The old server does still have the
original IP address. My documentation says seizing roles is drastic. Its
already been a long week, and my 10,000 users will kill me if I blow
everything up now -- please help. We also runs WINS. |

To correct my post, I meant Host (A) record - not SRV. Thanks
