2000 Server to 2003 Server Standard.......... |
|
|
I'm in processing of upgrading a customer from W2K Server to W23 Server
Standard... The current server is a domain controller. I need to preserve
apps, data, and active directory. Before making the purchase, the upgrade
path displayed on MS's site says I can do this upgrade. The manual that came
with W23 Server also says I can do this upgrade. Of course when I put in the
CD it tells me I can't upgrade. From what I've be able to read the last few
hours it appears that both the Server Site and Manual are incorrect, how can
that be...
Any assistance pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated!
Thanks - Ken |

Hi Ken,
First of all, I wonder what is the exact edition is installed on the
computer, Windows 2000 server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server. You can
upgrade from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition.
However, you cannot upgrade Windows from 2000 Advanced Server to Server
2003.
I list the operating systems from which you can upgrade to Window Server
2003 different editions for your reference.
Upgrade to Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
===============================
- Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later
- Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition with Service Pack 5 or
later
- Windows 2000 Server
Note: You cannot upgrade from an earlier version of a Windows server
operating system to an Itanium-based or x64-based version of a Windows
server operating system.
Upgrade Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
================================
- Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later
- Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition with Service Pack 5 or
later
- Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 5 or later
- Windows 2000 Server
- Windows 2000 Advanced Server
For more information, please refer to the following article:
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition: Upgrade or new installation?

If it is Windows 2000 Server and you cannot upgrade to Windows Server 2003
Standard, I would like to collect more information from you to narrow down
this issue.
1. What role is the Windows 2000 Server worked as, a member server or DC in
the domain or a stand alone computer?
2. What is the exact information shown on the message indicating that you
cannot upgrade? Please take a screenshot of the prompt and send it to me
at: < v-adapan@microsoft.com >.
Hope it helps.
