CMS and SPS\WSS Integration |
|
|
We currently maintain our corporate intranet using CMS and are developing
plans to replace an existing document storage system with SPS. We also have
many project collaboration sites created using WSS. I am looking for
articles/guidance/thought on how we should approach the integration of these
systems. Could anyone point me to some good resources and/or share their
experiences?
TIA

Hi Dean,
please check if the connector for SharePoint and MCMS covers your needs:

Cheers,
Stefan

Dean-
Check out Stephen Huen's articles on CodeProject.com... he has a lot of info
about building Web Parts to display MCMS content in SharePoint as well as
custom placeholders to display SharePoint content in MCMS.
I started a 4 part series on this subject
(http://andrewconnell.com/blog/archive/2004/10/24/581.aspx) but haven't
finished it as a lot of the content has been moved into a book I'm working
(http://www.packtpub.com/more_mcms/book) on that includes a good bit of
SharePoint <-> MCMS content publishing.
At my organization, we've taken MCMS and SPS 2003 & merged the two to
provide a full featured portal, with all the features of MCMS (such as
publishing workflow), for our corporate intranet.
From a 10,000' view, consider anything in a Web Part "publish-able"
to/within MCMS and anything in MCMS "publish-able" within SharePoint.
As Stefan suggested, the Connector has some good OOTB controls (placeholders
& Web Parts) that will get you started with some basic stuff. You'll also
find great value in Stephen's articles in CodeProject.

Well I haven't had much work except for tieing the 2 together with Web Parts.
In regards to a resource you may want to check out the link in my sig.

My intention (put across poorly) in my original post when I mentioned the
book & what we did at our org was only trying to say that the possibilities
for sharing content between the two applications is very feasible.

Thanks for all of the great info, I have reviewed it and learned a lot but I
still have some confusion about how to proceed. It is not clear to me which
system should be used to provide the main navigational structure. I
currently have an intranet using CMS Channels and menus. After we role out
SPS, I'll have Areas/Topics, Sites, etc to use as navigation. How should
these 2 different techniques be used?

~GREAT~ question, it's really going to depend upon your requirements. What
you need to decide on is what will be the primary experience of your end
user... SPS or MCMS? I personally think you'll have an easier time making
SPS your primary and integrate MCMS into the solution. One challenge you'll
hit is that you can't customize the SharePoint navigation... it will always
show you the areas and nothing else. For us, this was an issue so what we
did was use SPS as our primary experience and then hook up a service that
created a MCMS channel for each SPS area. Then we linked the two up [areas
& channels] (too much detail to go into here), ripped out the SPS vertical
navigation from the site def., replaced it with a custom navigation we
built, and poof: we had a navigation we could customize and ever SPS area
had it's own MCMS channel so we could provide the best of both worlds: a
SharePoint experience with all the features of MCMS if it was so warranted.
