RPC Error |
|
|
i am having a dell server which i have configured as a Domain Controller, Dns
Server, DHCP server and a WINS server. It was functioning well until i
installed updates on friday 14th October 2005. it then asked for a restart
for the updates to take effect. after the restart the local area connection
icon is missing from the my network places properties box. i tried dcdiag and
netdiag. there are some errors in the event viewer saying DsBindWithSpnEx()
Failed with error 1753 and also if i try to uninstall dns it gives an error
stating "the service database is locked". I desperately need help. this is
the only Domain controller i have in my domain with the said services.please
help. |

Which update(s) did you install?
If the NIC disappeared, maybe it was a driver issue that caused this? Did
one of the updates you selected affect the NIC driver? All or most services,
especially AD, all rely on the NIC interface being UP. If not UP, then all
other services fail in a snowball effect, apparently as what you're seeing.
Have you tried updating the NIC driver or doing a Rollback on the driver?
Do you have a recent backup?

I had a client with this problem just yesterday morning. This is a
permissions problem on the %windir%\registration folder.
Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the
%windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you
install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC

Kevin, interestingly these errors have been coming up the past few days and
didn't make sense. I just read an article how a recent security fix may be
related to recent errors, due to if the default perms were altered on the
Windows installation directory. This makes more sense now after reading the
tech article you posted. Here's the article I read:

Hi Ace,
I finally had to reinstall the operating system on my DC to resolve this
problem because nothing seemed to help and my management wanted an instant
solution. Needless to say all the clients had to be reconfigured to join the
domain again. I am still configuring the DC because i had set it up as a WSUS
server as well. This is my first job as a network administrator so m still
learning the ropes. Not having a backup DC was a blunder. but i want to know
whether the changes on the first DC would have replicated to the additional
DC (if i had one) and rendered it useless as well.... and finally what was
the solution to the prob??? some fix??

Well, *IF* the problem was based on the article Kevin posted, then it will
NOT have propagated since the permissions are specific for that machine
only.
Since you blew yuor machine away and started from scratch, we'll never know
what the problem or the fix would have been. Did you read the articles and
attempt to try it before reinstalling?
And YES, having a minimum of two DCs is highly recommended for fault
tolerance to avoid losing all of your domain data in the future.
