I am running Win 2003. I am reinstalling software on new server, but need to
allow for references to old server. Both servers are in the subdomain -
'student'.
When I try to add an alias for the old server I receive the following error:
An alias (CNAME) record cannot be added to this DNS name. The DNS name
contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record. Also, when I
try nslookup on the old server it still resolves to the old IP. I have
search everywhere I know, but do not see the old reference anywhere. I
assume the alias error is due to the old reference. How do I troubleshoot -
I have searched and searched - I don't see an old reference.
Thanks for any help - very frustrated.

A CNAME record cannot exist on the same node with any other records except
NS records.

When you resolve the old server's name, are you using the host name in
nslookup?
If you use nslookup -d2 oldeserevername, you should be able to see the DNS
Suffix used to get the IP. Do you have a WINS server?

My problem turned out to be simple, although I'm uncertain why it caused such
a problem. I have two DNS servers. I opened to DNS screen on the 2nd DNS
server to confirm that my change replicated after I made the first change. I
forgot I even had the screen open. After that my changes made to the 1st DNS
Server did not take full effect. When I gave up for the evening, and was
shutting all the windows and remote sessions down, I noticed I could still
see the old information in the 2nd DNS server screen - even after refresh.
Once I had only one DNS screen open at a time, things worked fine.
Thanks for your reply.
