SBS 2000 -> new exchange 2003, SQL 2000, same DC box |
|
|
Howdy folks,
Lot's of smart peoples here that I could learn a great deal from. My
scenario is that I need to upgrade from one SBS 2000 box to a W2K3 network.
I have a new server for Exchange and a new server for SQL. I have to use the
same server that the SBS 2000 installation is on for the W2K3 enterprise
server (and I need to upgrade some hard drives).
Could someone point me in the right direction to find the safest process to
perform this task? Any and all tips are greatly appreciated.
Thanks much! |

Thanks for the tips Cris. Unfortunately one server won't be able to keep up
with the load that all of our applications, email and databases require.
I've already purchased the hardware and software for the change, just looking
for tips to make my life easier through the process.
Thanks again!

If you have purchased a new server why not go to SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003 and when SP 2 releases your private store goes from 16GB to 75GB.
You are talking about a whole lot of money to do what you are suggesting....all new Exchange CALs and SQL CALs not to mention the actual Server Software Cost.
Depending on number of cals you could upgrade the software for under 2k
Unless you have grown past 75 users or need trusts to another domain...think you're making a mistake

As Chris suggested you may be better off upgrading to SBS 2003. You can run
Exchange 2003 on the SBS 2003 Server and then run other apps on additional
servers in the SBS Domain. I have a client that has an SBS 2003 Server, SQL
App Server, Terminal Server, File and Print Server all residing in the SBS
domain. Unless you are out growing the 75 user limit I would still suggest
going to SBS 2003.

Thank you for the response John. One important detail that I neglected to
mention in my previous posts was that I expect to hit the 75 user limit in
the next 9 to 12 months. Because of that I decided to bite the bullet now.

Makes sense. Going to Standard Windows Domain should be no problem. You
can either use the www.sbsmigration.com site or create an entirely new
domain and recreate user accounts, printers etc. You should be able to
exmerge.exe your Exchange data to pst files for import into new Exchange
Server. You may also try to copy the entire Exchange Databases to the new
domain and remount the databases without using exmerge. The nice thing
about creating the new domain is that you can migrate while the existing SBS
domain remains operational. SBSmigration pretty much explains the same
process but with some tools provided to help with migration.
