We have just installed a new WSS/portal server (and this is not the first
one) and when documents are uploaded to the portal site document library,
when an user (who has contributor or administrator - it makes no difference)
hovers over them, no drop down menu allowing edit etc is presented at all.
All any user can do is click on the document link which opens it as read only
in the browser.

The other portal/WSS servers don't have this problem but one is a WSS site
and the other points to a different SQL backend in a different forest. We
have checked all setups and can't find a difference but obviously there is
one!

Any ideas gratefully received.

If the document library resides on a Portal Area by default the Name Linked
to document is selected which will put the user into the document library
where the drop down is available. If you want the drop down available on the
portal area or wss webpart change the Shared WebPart view to show Name
(linked to document with edit menu).

I have the exact same problem. I have created document libraries on a couple
of different site (all under the same portal). Some of the lists show a drop
down and some don't. I don't understand your last sentence

"If you want the drop down available on the
portal area or wss webpart change the Shared WebPart view to show Name
(linked to document with edit menu). "

Exactly how do you do this. When I select "Modify Shared Web Part" I don't
see anything that references "Show Name" or linked to document with edit menu?

Thanks,
Mike

Pulling a document library onto the Portal Area is creating a web part with
its own view. The steps below will allow you to have the "drop down" edit
menu when the document name is clicked.

Web Part on Portal Area

1. Add the document library to the Portal Area
2. Click Edit Page
3. Click the arrow in the right hand corner of the document library web part
4. Chose Modify Shared Web Part
5. Click Edit the Current View
6. Select Name (linked to document with edit menu)

Within the Document Library

1. Click Modify Settings and Columns
2. Click All Documents under Views
3. Select Name (linked to document with edit menu)
