how many CALs do I have? |
|
|
Hi,
When trying Administration Tools>Licensing on my SMS 2000, I get 'For
licensing use the Small Business Server console.'
1. I want to know how many CALs I have.
2. Are they per device or per user?
Thank you,
Radu |

I presume you mean SBS 2000 (not SMS 2000).
How many licenses do I have installed
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=112
SBS 2000 uses the older "per device" license model and not "per user/per
device" model of SBS 2003.

I'm going to guess that 'SMS 2000' is a typo and should really be SBS 2000.
per user vs per device CAL definition is a Windows 2003 concept, it is not
relevent to W2K.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;327644
blah, blah, blah...
To determine how many CALs are installed in SBS 2000, click Start, click
Small Business Server Administrator Console, and then click the About link
on the Server Status (BackOffice Home) window.
To determine how many CALs are installed on Windows Small Business Server
2003, click Start, click Server Management, click Licensing, and then view
the Installed licenses value.

That sounds right. Since SBS 2003 comes with 5 CALs that can be designated
as either User, Device or a combination of the two, you would then need to
buy either 5 additional User or 5 additional Device CALs to bring the total
to 10 CALs for SBS 2003. You should be eligible for the SBS 2003 Premium
upgrade package plus the upgrade CALs.
In general, User CALs are more useful unless you have "shift work" at your
business.

Yes, I meant SBS 2000.
I am upgrading to SBS 2003, so I have a choice between user or device
CALs,
right?
I still have the 5 CALs floppy for the extra CALs I bought for SBS 2000;
all
I need to do is buy a 5 upgrade CALs for either user or device, correct?
Thank you lots,
Radu

Hi Radu,
If you only bought 5 extra CAL's with SBS 2000, you can only buy 5 upgrade
CAL's for SBS 2003. Extra CAL's will have to be the full price.

Thank you all.
If I remember right, when I installed sbs 2000, I still had to make a
choice, like per seat, or per something (can I figure out which I opted for
when I installed system?). Will that have no bearing on my new sbs 2003
choice of CAL type, which is going to be "per user", I think.
Thanks again,
Radu

I am still intersted in knowing the answer to this:

Also, SBS 2000 "About" links says I have 10 licenses, but I have 13 users
created. Is it concurent connections to the domain that matters?
Thanks,

Re: how many CALs do I have? |

SBS 2003 uses a different licensing model than SBS 2000. In general, unless
you have shift work (multiple users using the same computer throughout the
work day), selecting User CALs is usually the better way to go. Each User
can then authenticate to the SBS server from any number of devices (LAN PCs,
Remote PCs, PDAs, mobile devices, etc.). Device CALs are tied to the actual
device are assigned to and only one user can authenticate from that device
at any given time.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/techinfo/overview/licensingfaq.mspx
-------------------
What is the difference between a device CAL and a user CAL?
A. A device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to access the server
software. A user CAL permits one user (using any device) to access the
server software.
