I am having trouble deleting some old files and folders from some shared
network storage folders. I get an Access denied error message when
attempting to view the contents of certain folders, and even if I try to
take ownership of them (as the Domain Administrator), I get an error saying,
"An error occurred applying security information. (folder). Access is
denied.".

If the admin isn't able to take ownership, and the owner of the folder is an
account for a user that no longer exists at the company (the account still
exists in Active Directory, but it has been disabled), how can I delete
these folders (and all their contents)?

When you take ownership at the parent folder be sure to select the option to
replace owner on subcontainers and objects also. If you still are having
problems try logging onto the server as a local administrator to try and
also check membership of the local administrators group to make sure that
the domain admins group is a member which it would be by default but could
have been removed. I don't recommend logging onto a domain computer as a
domain administrator however unless it is known to be secure - no malware,
malicious scripts, or keyboard loggers to try and capture your password or
do damage with the powers of a domain administrator account.

If you still have problems try running ChechDisk on the server and consider
using a command line tool like fileacl that has a /force switch to take
ownership and refer to the second link below that explains how to remove
difficult files that may have names that are illegal in Windows. --- Steve
